The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are each God individually and yet they are together the one true God of the Bible.

The Christian doctrine of the Trinity (Latin: Trinitas, lit, 'triad', from Latin: trinus "threefold") holds that God is one God, but three coeternal consubstantial persons or hypostases - the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirt - as "one God in three Divine Persons." God is a triune God. The term "tri" meaning three, and "unity" meaning one.
Tri + Unity = Trinity. God is yet three "persons" who have the same essence of deity,
Someone once said, "If you try to explain the Trinity, you will lose your mind. But if you deny it, you will lose your soul."
No one fully understands the Trinity, it's a paradox and one of the biggest mysteries of all time! If you do not believe in the doctrine of the Trinity, than how can you even be considered a Christian at all? Other religions, such as Jehovah's Witnesses, think that by honoring the doctrine, this means that Christians are actually worshipping three separate Gods, which is referred to as "Tritheism". This is not true at all. The Witnesses even ridicule the Trinity with this little equation: 1+1+1=3. In reality, a Christian views the Trinity based on this equation: 1x1x1=1.
Examples to Compare to the Holy Trinity...
It's important to remember that each example fails eventually. They don't prove the Trinity, they simply help us to understand the concept.
Water - (H2O) There are 3 different forms of H2O: water, ice, and steam. Although they are in 3 different forms, they are all still H2O.
The Sun - From it we receive: light, heat, and radiation. There are 3 distinct aspects but only 1 sun.
The Universe - It is trinitarian by design made up of: matter, space, and time, which are then broken down into 3's: Matter - solid, liquid, gas / Space - height, width, and depth / Time - past, present, and future
An Egg - Made up of: a shell, eggwhite, and the yolk. All 3 are needed for the egg to be complete.
Scripture Proving the Holy Trinity
Proof of the Trinity can be found in both the Old and New Testaments. Although the word "trinity" is not in the Bible, we still believe it because of what the Bible teaches. You don't find the word "bible" in the Bible, but you still believe it to be true, so why not Trinity? You don't have to see a word in the Bible for its concepts to be true.
(1 Corinthians 8:6) "yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."
(2 Corinthians 3:17) "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
(2 Corinthians 13:14) "May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."
(Colossians 2:9) "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form."
(Isaiah 44:6) "This is what the LORD says - Israel's King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God."
(John 10:30) "I and the Father are one."
(Matthew 28:19) "Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
(John 14:16-17) "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."
(1 John 5:7-8) "For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement."
(1 Corinthians 12:4-6) "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."
(Ephesians 4:4-6) "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."
(Colossians 1:15-17) "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."
(John 14:9-11) "Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves."
(Acts 2:33) "Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (Jesus) has poured forth this which you both see and hear."
A Better Understanding of the Trinity
God is God. He can do anything, be anything, and be everything at every moment of every second of every day. We are people, and our minds can't always understand everything about God. This is why we have things like the Bible and prayer to bring us closer to understanding Him, but we won't know everything as He does. Since all Three Persons of the Trinity are equally God, we may pray to any member of it. Some people aren't comfortable praying to the Holy Spirit, but what about the songs of praise directed towards the Spirit. Isn't that just like praying anyways? There is no jealousy among the members of the Trinity nor could there ever be. You can direct your prayer to any member based on what you are praying about in that moment.
Think of the three members are parts of God's personality. He uses other parts of Himself to accomplish His goals.
Father - All-seeing creator. Normally we pray to the Father in the name of the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Son - Jesus is the physical manifestation of God that we are able to see. He is also a teacher and the Word of God. He came to die for our sins in order to bring us to God.
Holy Spirit - Designed to speak to us. It's the little voice in your head guiding you in the right direction. It was sent into the world to glorify the Son, causing us to see the Son as the ground for our access to the Father.

We live in the third-dimension, where everything has a certain height, width, and depth. People can look alike, but no one is exactly the same. They are distinct individuals, just like the Three Persons in the Trinity. God, however, lives without limitations of a three-dimensional universe. He is spirit, and is infinitely more complex than we are or will ever be.
